The latest suspected incursion has put Finland on alert, with authorities examining the aircraft’s flight path and circumstances as tensions remain high along the Nato-Russia frontier

Finland has launched an official investigation after a Russian state aircraft was suspected of entering Finnish airspace over the Gulf of Finland, adding to growing security concerns along the country’s border with Russia.

The suspected violation took place off the coast of Porvoo in the eastern Gulf of Finland, according to Finland’s Ministry of Defence. The aircraft allegedly entered Finnish sovereign airspace for several minutes and travelled a few kilometres inside Finnish territory before turning back towards international airspace.

Finnish authorities responded by activating the country’s air surveillance and defence mechanisms to identify and monitor the aircraft. Officials are now examining radar and other available data to establish the exact flight path and circumstances of the incident.

Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen said Finland takes every suspected violation of its airspace seriously and confirmed that an investigation was under way.

Latest in series of incidents

The latest incident comes amid a series of suspected Russian airspace violations involving Finland.

Finnish authorities previously accused Russian military aircraft of entering Finnish airspace in May and June. On both occasions, Helsinki summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires to raise concerns over the incidents.

Finland shares a 1,340-kilometre border with Russia, the longest land border between a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) member and Russia. Its proximity to Russia has made air and maritime security a key concern for Helsinki.

Security concerns have intensified since Russia launched its full-scale military operation in Ukraine in February 2022.

The war prompted Finland to abandon decades of military non-alignment and join Nato in April 2023. Since then, Helsinki has stepped up defence cooperation with Nato allies and increased surveillance along its eastern frontier and in the Baltic Sea region.

The Gulf of Finland has particular strategic importance because it connects the Baltic Sea with the approaches to St Petersburg and is bordered by Finland, Estonia and Russia.

Authorities launch probe

The Finnish Border Guard is expected to examine radar information and other surveillance data to determine the aircraft’s exact route, the duration of the suspected incursion and the circumstances behind it.

Authorities will also seek to establish whether the aircraft crossed the border deliberately or because of a navigational error.

The incident comes as Nato members in the region remain particularly alert to Russian military activity. Finland has previously stressed that suspected airspace violations are treated seriously regardless of whether they are deliberate.
