Mackerel Season Gets Underway
The mackerel season has begun for the Faroese fleet, but fishing has so far been described as limited.
Finnur Fríði and Borgarin are currently fishing for mackerel in international waters north of the Faroe Islands, where several Greenlandic, Icelandic and Russian vessels are also operating.
Christian í Grótinum is fishing in Faroese waters, while Jupiter left Klaksvík today and has headed towards the mackerel grounds.
Despite a growing number of vessels joining the fishery, several Faroese pelagic vessels remain alongside or in port.
Gøtunes is currently in dry dock at Skála, while Høgaberg is in Fuglafjørður. Hoyvík, Birita and Fagraberg are alongside in Kollafjørður, while Arctic Voyager is at Hulki.
Norðborg and Tummas T are in Tórshavn, while Vestmenningur remains in Vestmanna.
The pelagic vessel Katrin Jóhanna is in Miðvágur.
Norðingur Heads Home to Land Catch
Norðingur has also been fishing for mackerel in international waters but has now set course for the Faroe Islands to land its catch.
The early reports suggest that the start of the fishery has been relatively subdued, despite vessels from several countries concentrating on the mackerel grounds north of the Faroe Islands.
With more Faroese vessels expected to join the fishery, attention will now turn to whether catches improve as the season develops and the fleet locates larger concentrations of mackerel.
