Füchse Berlin defeated MT Meljungen and won the opening game of the German handball Bundesliga in the 2026/27 season.
Berlin defeated Meljungen 33-31 in the first round of the German men’s handball Bundesliga in the 2026/27 season at Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, Germany on the 27th (local time).
Berlin, which led 17-9 in the first half, was heavily chased by Meljungen in the second half, but held the lead until the end and collected two points.

Berlin took the lead from the beginning of the game with a strong defense and Andreas Palicka’s good defense. The central defense centered on Max Darj and Miyajlo Marsenicé effectively blocked Meljungen’s attack, and Palitska also made a series of saves from the beginning, leading home fans to cheer.
Mathias Gidsel scored the first goal in the attack, followed by Mathes Langhoff making it 2-0. Meljungen balanced with a score by Dainis Kristofans, but Tobias øndahl again took Berlin’s lead.
Berlin’s airlift balance has become more stable over time. Langhof made it 6-3 in the 10th minute, and Tim Freihöfer made it 11–6 with a 7 m draw. Hákun West av Teigum also scored, and even goalkeeper Palitska scored himself, widening the gap to seven goals. In the second half, Berlin continued its stable game operation, leading 21-14 with points from Freihofer and Marcenich. But Meljungen did not easily back down either. He gradually narrowed the gap in response to Berlin’s attack, but Langhof broke the flow with consecutive goals. In particular, Gisele scored his sixth goal of the day with 13 minutes left before the end of the game, achieving a special record of 1,000th goal in the German Bundesliga.
In the middle of the second half, Berlin also solved the attack with a quick pass play from the backcourt line that followed Gröndal-Ranghof-Giegel. Gröndahl seemed to be solidifying his victory by making it 31-24 in the 51st minute. However, Meljungen continued to chase until the end, and at the end of the game, Berlin’s lead was greatly reduced. At the moment of the crisis, Palitska made a series of decisive saves, especially blocking up to a 7m draw, putting cold water on Meljungen’s pursuit. Berlin eventually held the lead until the end, winning 33-31.
In Berlin, Mates Langhof led the team to victory with nine goals, the most scored by both teams. Matthias Gisele and Tim Freihofer also scored seven goals each, while Tobias Gröndall played a key role in coordinating the attack with five goals. Andreas Palitska made seven saves and one goal to help Berlin win the opener. Miyailo Marcenich and Hakon Best Ab Teigum each scored two goals.
At Meljungen, Mikkel Mensing scored the most goals in the team with six goals, while Martins Ignatow and August Stefánsson scored five and four goals, respectively. Joel Drosten also scored four goals, but failed to reverse the eight-goal gap in the first half.
