Tallinn city authorities have put up for sale a historic two-story 19th-century wooden house at 14 Sakala Street in the center of the Estonian capital. The starting price for the lot, including the building, is €788,000. Tallinn City Council decided to sell it in June 2026, ERR News reports.
Demolition plans were abandoned
In 2018, Tallinn’s Transport Department proposed demolishing the structure during the planned reconstruction of Sakala Street. The house is located several meters closer to the road than other buildings on the street, which complicated the construction of wide pedestrian and bicycle paths.
The National Heritage Board opposed the demolition, as it is the last old wooden building remaining on the street. The city council stressed that the house’s architectural value had been assessed repeatedly and that the property must be preserved.

Conditions for the buyer
The terms of sale published in August state that the buyer is obliged to preserve and restore the house. Part of the commercial premises on the second floor was granted to a private individual for cultural activities for an indefinite period at a monthly fee of €114.23.
Irina Kuzina, head of Tallinn’s media department, said that the sale notice explicitly states the obligation to preserve the building, despite social media reports about its possible demolition. According to her, plans to reconstruct Sakala Street are no longer being discussed.
The house requires major repairs: the roof leaked, and the wooden structures have rotted in places. At the same time, the building retains an ornamented wooden facade, original cladding, corner boards, and double-leaf entrance doors with a canopy. Inside, the original room layout, tiled stoves, wooden stairs, and interior doors with metal fittings have survived.
