Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure have brought the 913 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm into commercial operation in the German North Sea, completing a major construction and marine logistics programme involving 83 turbines and a broad European supply chain.
The wind farm is located about 72 kilometres off the German coast and covers approximately 75 square kilometres. Its 83 turbines each have a rated capacity of 11 MW.
European supply chain delivers offshore build
Construction mobilised equipment and contractors across several European countries. Turbines and foundations were supplied from Germany and Denmark, cables came from Germany and France, while installation vessels were provided from the Netherlands and Belgium. Around 100 German companies were contracted during construction.
The final turbine was installed in January 2025. Borkum Riffgrund 3 uses an unusual grid connection arrangement that removes the need for a dedicated offshore substation. The turbines connect through 66 kV cables directly to TenneT’s DolWin epsilon offshore converter platform.
For the offshore wind logistics sector, the project illustrates the scale of coordination required between component manufacturing, ports, installation vessels, cable suppliers and offshore construction teams before a wind farm can move from installation to revenue generating operation.
Corporate buyers secure 786 MW
The project has long term power purchase agreements covering 786 MW of its 913 MW capacity. Amazon has contracted 350 MW, BASF 186 MW, Covestro 100 MW, Energie Handels Gesellschaft and REWE Group 100 MW, and Google 50 MW. Contract durations range from 10 to 25 years.
Borkum Riffgrund 3 becomes Ørsted’s sixth operational offshore wind farm in Germany and follows the 253 MW Gode Wind 3, commissioned in 2025.
“With Borkum Riffgrund 3 now operational, we’ve delivered a landmark project for Germany and European offshore wind while making further progress on our 8.1 GW construction portfolio,” Patrick Harnett, Ørsted’s Chief Construction Officer, said.
The project increases Ørsted’s installed offshore wind capacity in Germany to around 2.5 GW. Operations and maintenance for Borkum Riffgrund 3 and the company’s wider German offshore portfolio will be carried out from Norden Norddeich and Emden.
