Sweden’s royal family will travel to Oslo next week for the funeral of Norway’s King Harald V, who died last week at the age of 89.
All adult members of the Swedish royal family are expected to attend the funeral on September 9, including King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, and Princess Madeleine and her husband Christopher O’Neill.
The Swedish and Norwegian royal families have close personal and family ties. Harald’s mother was Sweden’s princess Märtha, and the Norwegian king was godfather to Crown Princess Victoria, who knew him as “Uncle Harald.”
Princess Christina, the youngest sister of Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf, will also attend with her husband Tord Magnuson.
Denmark’s King Frederik X and Queen Mary have already confirmed their attendance. The Danish royal family is also distantly related to Norway’s.
The Netherlands will be represented by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, former queen Princess Beatrix and Crown Princess Catharina-Amalia.
Belgium’s King Philippe and Queen Mathilde will also travel to Oslo, as will Japan’s Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko, according to Norwegian broadcaster NRK.
Several European heads of state have also confirmed their attendance, NRK reported, including Icelandic President Halla Tómasdóttir and her husband. The presidents of the three Baltic states are also expected to attend, as is German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
