Quantum Foundry Copenhagen is preparing to establish a 5,300-square-meter quantum chip fabrication facility in Copenhagen, marking an important step in Europe’s ambition to turn its quantum research strength into commercial manufacturing capability. Expected to open in 2027, the facility will develop and scale advanced manufacturing equipment for next-generation quantum chips and provide wafer fabrication to quantum technology companies globally on commercial terms.
The facility will bring multiple critical capabilities under one roof, including nanofabrication of quantum materials, advanced characterization, testing, chip assembly, packaging and ultra-high-vacuum manufacturing. This integrated approach is designed to address one of quantum computing’s biggest challenges: moving promising technologies from research laboratories into reliable, scalable production.

The initiative comes as Europe seeks greater technological sovereignty. While the region has built world-class quantum research capabilities, commercial leadership will depend on its ability to manufacture high-quality quantum processors at scale. The European Union’s Quantum Europe Strategy and forthcoming Quantum Act are increasingly focused on commercialization, manufacturing and deployment.
The project is backed by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, which has committed more than DKK 2.9 billion (€390 million) to quantum technologies. This includes its Quantum Computing Programme at the Niels Bohr Institute, which aims to develop Denmark’s first fully functional fault-tolerant quantum computer before 2034.
The bigger significance is strategic: quantum chips could eventually support breakthroughs in drug discovery, sustainable materials, energy optimization and cybersecurity. By connecting frontier research with industrial manufacturing, Copenhagen is positioning itself not merely as a quantum research center, but as a potential European production hub. The race for quantum leadership is increasingly shifting from who can demonstrate quantum technology to who can manufacture it reliably at scale.
