On September 7, the European Union plans to announce new investments in Greenland and strengthen political ties with the island. According to Reuters, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will present the plan amid claims made by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Von der Leyen arrived in Greenland on September 6 for a two-day visit. Her trip is intended to demonstrate the European Union’s support for Greenland and Denmark, which have firmly rejected Trump’s efforts to establish U.S. control over the world’s largest island.
The European Commission is expected to present investment plans for several strategic sectors. In particular, funds are planned to be directed toward the extraction of critical minerals, the development of satellite communications, and renewable energy.
While in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, von der Leyen stated that the proposed package would be “substantial,” though she did not specify its exact amount.
According to European officials, the new package will not only provide a significant increase in funding but also expand the list of sectors that will receive EU funds. Previously, European support for the island had focused primarily on fisheries and the education system.
For his part, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated that the island wishes to develop “a close friendship and a good partnership” with the European Union.
The EU’s increased engagement comes amid a sharp rise in the strategic importance of the Arctic. Melting ice is opening up new shipping routes and facilitating access to significant mineral reserves. The United States, Europe, Russia, and China are increasingly competing for influence in the region.
The issue became particularly contentious following Trump’s repeated statements about the need for U.S. control over Greenland. The U.S. president justified his position on national security grounds and claimed that Denmark was allegedly unable to adequately defend the island.
Greenland and Denmark have rejected these claims. European officials have also emphasized that Greenland is part of NATO territory and is already protected by the Alliance’s collective defense mechanism. In addition, the U.S. has the right to expand its military presence on the island under a long-standing agreement, according to Reuters.
