European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced an investment package worth 200-million euros for Greenland. The move is seen as an attempt to strengthen ties as US President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to acquire the Danish autonomous territory.
Von der Leyen was in Greenland for a two-day visit through Monday. Speaking at a joint news conference with Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen in Nuuk, she said the investment through next year focuses on areas including connectivity and minerals such as rare earths.
She emphasized the importance of strengthening ties, saying that Greenland is “a trusted friend” and “a member of our wider European family.” She said, “Greenland’s future is for the people of Greenland and Denmark to decide, no one else.”
