NEW BERLIN — No one was injured in a New Berlin fire Thursday afternoon, according to a New Berlin Fire Department press release.
Fire crews responded at 12:06 p.m. to a fire at a multi-family residence in the 13000 block of West Fountain Drive. Upon arrival, crews identified a garbage can fire inside a bathroom.
“The resident discovered the fire after coming home and called 911. The container and its contents were completely consumed, resulting in fire and smoke damage to the bathroom and adjacent wall areas near the point of origin. The fire did not extend beyond the bathroom due to the door being closed at the time of the incident. New Berlin Fire Department personnel removed the burned contents and ventilated the apartment unit. No injuries were reported to residents or firefighters,” a release said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No mutual aid units from neighboring departments were required.
“The City of New Berlin Fire Department reminds residents that closed doors can significantly slow the spread of smoke and fire. Keeping bedroom and interior doors closed, especially while sleeping, can provide critical time to escape during an emergency,” the release said.
