Driver flees scene after rollover crash causes utility pole fire in Berlin

  • 2026-02-20

BERLIN, Conn. (WFSB) – A driver fled the scene after crashing into a utility pole and sparking a brush fire Thursday night on Elton Road.

Berlin Volunteer Fire Department responded to the accident at 11:40 p.m. between Old Farms Place and Mallard Lane.

The driver left the roadway and struck a utility pole, causing the vehicle to roll over before coming to a stop against a tree. The utility pole was heavily damaged, causing downed wires and a subsequent fire in the brush along the roadway.

Firefighters conducted a brief search for the operator, who had fled the scene. Berlin police found the driver a short distance away with assistance from one of their K9 units.

Power has been disconnected and the fire has been extinguished.

The roadway will remain closed to through traffic for an extended period while utility crews work to repair the pole and restore power.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
