This fixture has been contested 21 times across all competitions, with Eintracht Frankfurt holding the historical edge after winning ten of those encounters. While Union Berlin have claimed victory on only five occasions, recent meetings have favoured the Berlin side. Union are unbeaten in their last four matches against Frankfurt and earlier this season secured a dramatic 4–3 away victory in a thrilling contest.

Union Berlin come into this fixture in the midst of a league slump. They are winless in their last five Bundesliga matches, drawing their opening three before suffering defeats to Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim.
A return to form is badly needed, especially at home, where they have not tasted victory since mid-December’s win over RB Leipzig. That result remains one of just three home league wins for Union all season.

Eintracht Frankfurt are enduring a similarly difficult campaign. They have already exited both the Champions League and the DFB-Pokal and are without a win in their last six Bundesliga outings, collecting just three points from a possible 18.
Defensive frailties have been a major concern, with Frankfurt conceding the joint-most goals in the division alongside bottom-placed Heidenheim. They will be desperate not only to end their winless run, but also to record their first away clean sheet of the season.
