Riveiro returned to management with the Swedish outfit in December, following a six-month hiatus after he was sacked as Al Ahly boss.
Due to the Swedish club season running through the calendar year, Riveiro’s first competitive game came two months after his appointment.
The Spaniard’s first game in charge was against newly-promoted Vasteras SK in the Swedish Cup group stage, where they suffered a 2-0 defeat, Aftonbladet reported.
Speaking after the game, Riveiro gave reasons behind why his team may have lost their season opener.
“Both teams followed their game plan that they had for the day,” he explained. “Västerås was good in the press, organised and aggressive. We had problems finding the right way behind them,” the 50-year-old added.
“We didn’t do it enough times. The goals came in situations when they were very good in the press. To be honest, I don’t think it’s a 2-0 game, but the result is what it is,” the ex-Bucs coach added.
The former Al Ahly tactician explained that he was still happy with the performance, despite the loss, and said it would take time for his players to get used to his style.
“I’m happy to see how the team tried to dominate the game. I’m happy with that. Then we know it will take time and we have a lot to work on, especially considering the kind of football we want to play this season,” he concluded.
