A pundit in Denmark reckons it’s time for Schmeichel to move aside amid his worrying form for Celtic
Kasper Schmeichel of Celtic looks dejected
Kasper Schmeichel has been told his time as Denmark’s No.1 is up by a prominent pundit in his homeland – who wants to see him benched for the World Cup playoffs.
The Celtic keeper has been heavily criticised for his performances for the Scottish champions this season after a series of unconvincing displays – notably dropping a couple of clangers in their 4-1 Europa League defeat to Stuttgart.
He is still Denmark’s first choice and is due to play in the play-offs against North Macedonia next month. But his status as the undisputed first choice for the Danes is under threat and his international future has been the subject of debate in his homeland.
And former Sonderjyske star Jannik Liburd – a current US Virgin Islands international and top Danish TV pundit – reckons the time has come for national boss Brian Riemer to make a tough call.
He said: “I can already see the headlines, but yes – I think it’s time for Kasper Schmeichel to be dropped from the Danish team.
“It’s a very vulnerable position to change. And Kasper Schmeichel has been a legend and a driving force on this national team for many years and has been at a level that can be described as world class. But it’s time to change and it may have been for a while.
“Mads Hermansen is playing now and has become the first choice goalkeeper at West Ham. And unfortunately, what we see from Kasper Schmeichel is not good enough anymore.
“I have enormous respect for him, but when I look at the goals Celtic are conceding this season, I’m not comfortable as a national team supporter.”
