Major Grimsby employer Ørsted has opened applications for its coveted summer work experience programme. The global wind farm developer and operator is inviting applications from Year 10 students who could benefit from the five day scheme that will introduce them to different teams within the renewables giant, and take part in practical activities that will expose them to different careers available.

Students will see inside Ørsted’s East Coast Hub in Grimsby – the company’s largest UK hub and where about 600 workers in high skilled jobs are based. The programme has space for 10 students to take part in between July 6 and 10, with spaces for Year 11 students set to follow in August.

Harriet Farmery, community engagement officer, said: “This work experience week is a fantastic way for local young people to see what’s possible. By meeting our teams and trying out activities across health and safety, communications, and technician roles, students can connect their interests to real careers, build confidence, and take the next step toward a low‑carbon future.”

Ørsted has run the work experience programme for several years, and says that through it, young people have been inspired into different offshore wind careers. Its content is designed to help students build confidence, develop workplace skills, and make informed choices about future education and career routes.

The region is central to the rapidly expanding North Sea renewables sector. In recent days, European government leaders gathered at the North Sea Summit 2026 to talk about mammoth investment plans which could see tens of thousands of wind turbines built in the windy sea.

Grimsby’s East Coast Hub is already vital in being operations and maintenance base for six offshore wind farms – making it the world’s largest such hub. Last year, local business leaders were shown around the facility and told how one in four UK homes will soon be powered with energy that comes ashore in Grimsby.

Among the focus for Ørsted’s Port of Grimsby-based team is the running of the world’s largest wind farm, Hornsea 2, which includes 165 turbines positioned nearly 90km off the coast. The 178 sq mile farm uses mainly turbine blades built at the nearby Siemens Gamesa factory in Hull, which employs more than 1,300 people.

Applications are open to Year 10 students who can make their own way to the East Coast Hub on Eastside Road near Alexandra Dock, with an application form now available. Applicants must be able to commit to the full five days, and in the application must tell Ørsted what they want to get out of the experience. Entries will close on Monday, February 16 with successful candidates due to hear back in March.
