This Wednesday evening, on her Instagram account and in a press release from theAustrian Ski Association, biathlete Lisa Theresa Hauser announced that she had decided to end her career at the age of 32. The Austrian will hang up her skis and rifle for good at the end of the week, after the World Cup in Oslo-Holmenkollen (Norway).

Six-time World Youth and Junior medallist Lisa Theresa Hauser began her World Cup career in December 2012 in Hochfilzen (Austria). She went on to become a real pillar of the Austrian national team, and had her best season of the 2020/2021 season. Third in the sprint inOberhof (Germany), she scored her first podium on the world circuit before becoming mass-start world champion in Pokljuka (Slovenia) a few weeks later.

Winner of two other world medals that year (silver in the mixed relay and pursuit), she also lifted the small globe in the individual event. Although she did not take home a medal from the 2022 Olympics, Lisa Theresa Hauser ended the 2021/2022 winter on the third step of the overall podium.

An incredible track record

Over the course of her career, the Austrian won six individual World Cup titles, reached the podium thirteen times and took part in four Olympic Games. Her last World Cup victory came last December in the pursuit at Östersund (Sweden).

With this success, she joined the very select circle of biathletes who have won at least once in each of the biathlon disciplines (sprint, pursuit, individual, mass-start).

It’s not a decision I took overnight, because biathlon has been a very important part of my life for many years,” she explains. Over the last few years, managing the stress and pressure while performing well in competition has required an enormous amount of energy. Despite this, I’ve always been passionate about the sport and willingly made sacrifices. Recently, I’ve felt that my priorities have changed: sport is no longer the most important thing for me. It’s time to open a new chapter.

“I’ve had a lot of highs and lows and a lot of emotional highs and lows. I’ll always have fond memories, especially of my coaches, team-mates and staff,” she continues. These are the people who will stay with me forever. In a team like this, it’s not a classic working relationship: we’re constantly together, on and off the track. We know each other inside out, and I’m going to miss these shared moments a lot. What I really want to do now is enjoy life after top-level sport, with a less structured daily routine, more spontaneity and more time for my loved ones.
