In Brussels, during the European Union leaders’ summit, the EU’s top diplomat warned that the union could easily find itself in a toxic conflict in the Middle East from which it would be difficult to exit.
The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, delivered a speech at the European Council meeting in Brussels and warned against joining an open war against Iran, which she said is allegedly led by the United States and Israel.
According to two diplomats who had been briefed on the speech’s contents during closed-door talks, the summit was held behind closed doors and was oriented toward presidents and prime ministers.
In her speech, Kallas stressed that the EU must avoid getting locked into a prolonged military campaign and maintain strategic autonomy in the region.
Experts note that the EU’s stance must be prudent and well-considered in order to support its allies without harming security, the economy, or humanitarian conditions in member states and neighboring regions.
