Stillstrom Establishes UK Base for Offshore Charging Rollout

According to a report from Offshore Energy, Stillstrom, a Denmark-based unit of A.P. Moller – Maersk, has formed a dedicated organization in Aberdeen, Scotland. The company intends to begin commercial deployment of its offshore vessel charging technology in the United Kingdom.

The solution, which has been in development since 2019, is moving from its development phase into commercial operations. The UK is described as one of the world’s most active offshore wind markets. Testing and collaboration with shipowners and developers have previously occurred in Aberdeen.

Service operations vessels, identified as highly energy-intensive, are the initial target for the charging systems. The company reports having substantial discussions with major wind farms and has signed partnership and compatibility agreements with leading vessel owners and operators.

As part of this expansion, Stillstrom has appointed a UK Managing Director who has been involved with the charging systems for four years. The establishment of a permanent Aberdeen presence is intended to facilitate closer work with operators, developers, and regulators.

Stillstrom has engaged in several partnerships in recent years. These include a memorandum of understanding with the Port of Aberdeen in 2022 for a feasibility study on a renewable-powered charging hub. Full offshore trials of the charging system were conducted at that port in 2024.

In the final month of last year, the company collaborated with the Port of Roenne on a study about integrating offshore wind with maritime electrification. Earlier this year, a joint study with ScottishPower Renewables concluded that using battery-powered service vessels in offshore wind operations is technically feasible and offers potential benefits. An agreement with vessel operator North Star was also signed in 2023.
