The terminal is being developed within the Port of Amsterdam. It is intended to serve as key infrastructure for reducing emissions in several Northern European industrial sectors, including steel production, heavy transport, shipping, and data centers.

When operational, the facility is designed to handle, store, and distribute hydrogen in gaseous and liquid forms. It will also manage liquid CO2 for reuse or permanent storage at international locations. Initial annual capacity targets are set for a specific volume of liquid hydrogen and a larger volume of liquid CO2, with plans for future expansion.

Engineering Scope and Timeline

KBR‘s work will establish the engineering basis, storage systems, operational parameters, and safety protocols for the terminal. This foundational work is aimed at creating the world’s first commercial-scale liquid hydrogen import system and its cryogenic infrastructure. The FEED is expected to be complete in 2026.

A company executive stated that KBR’s historical expertise in complex energy systems positions it to contribute to this pioneering project. The executive noted the project’s role in advancing future low-carbon supply chains.

Integrated Value Chain and Innovation

The terminal is expected to enable new international supply routes, linking production centers with industrial demand across Europe. Its design will incorporate multiple transportation methods.

KBR will also work on integrating the terminal with a new class of specialized liquid hydrogen carriers and downstream distribution networks. A significant engineering objective involves using the cold energy released during hydrogen regasification to liquefy carbon dioxide, aiming to improve sustainability and operational efficiency.

The chief executive of EcoLog described the commencement of the FEED phase as a significant achievement for the team. The CEO expressed optimism about the terminal’s potential contribution to European decarbonization goals.

Advancing Global Standards

The project presents an opportunity to establish worldwide engineering standards for the large-scale transport, handling, and storage of liquid hydrogen.
