Two DAF trucks were detained last week after they were found to contain mechanisms for switching number plates. The vehicles were transporting fruit from the Netherlands to Russia.

Truck cabins were checked upon suspicion that the vehicles were being used in Russia.

The drivers also had Russian vehicle registration certificates issued to the same trucks whose identification numbers (VIN) coincided with the VIN of trucks registered in the European Union (EU).

Upon further inspection it was determined that both vehicles had mechanisms for switching number plates.

One of them contained a modern system, whereby at a push of a button Lithuanian number plates automatically switched to Russian number plates.

The other vehicle had an older mechanism that covered Russian number plates, which then had to be replaced by hand using magnetic fasteners.

Both vehicles were impounded. One of them is valued EUR 12,300, while the other is valued EUR 50,200.

Goods they were transporting were seized as well.

EU carriers are prohibited from transporting goods in Russia, whereas Russian carriers are banned from transporting goods in the EU. It is therefore suspected that number plates were being switched to avoid existing restrictions.
