The outcome left Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen facing an uncertain path to a third term despite her party remaining the largest single group in parliament.

The election produced a hung parliament, with both left-leaning and right-leaning alliances falling short of a majority. As a result, the centrist Moderate Party, led by former prime minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, emerged as the key player capable of deciding the next government.

With no clear winner, attention quickly shifted to Lars Løkke Rasmussen, whose Moderate Party secured 14 seats in the 179-member parliament. His party now holds the balance of power and can determine which alliance ultimately governs the country.

Rasmussen urged political rivals to cooperate rather than remain divided.

Lokke Rasmussen called on rivals on the left and right to climb down from some of the positions they staked out in the campaign, and “come and play with us.”

He emphasised unity in uncertain times, saying:

Denmark “is a small country of 6 million people in a world of 8 billion, which is in upheaval — and there is war in Iran, and there is war in Ukraine,” he said. He argued that “We are one tribe. We must come together. We must not be divided.”

However, not all parties appeared willing to compromise. Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, leader of the Liberal Party, ruled out rejoining a coalition with Frederiksen’s Social Democrats, suggesting negotiations could be difficult.
