Highlights

For the Summer Games, athletes representing Denmark first competed at the Games of the I Olympiad Athens 1896, competing in the sports or disciplines of artistic gymnastics, athletics, fencing, shooting and weightlifting. At the Games of the I Olympiad Athens 1896, Viggo Jensen became the first athlete representing Denmark to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing gold in the men’s weightlifting heavyweight two hand lift event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing Denmark first competed at the XIV Olympic Winter Games St. Moritz 1948, taking part in the disciplines of figure skating and speed skating. At the XVIII Olympic Winter Games Nagano 1998, athletes representing Denmark won a first Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour, capturing silver in the women’s curling event.

At Beijing 2022, Denmark’s delegation of athletes was more than three times larger than any previous Winter Games, mostly due to the NOC’s first participation in both the men’s and women’s ice hockey tournaments. The women’s team managed one win against Czechia from their four preliminary round matches and did not progress any further. The men’s team managed preliminary round wins against Czechia and Switzerland, and then beat Latvia in the play-off round, before losing to ROC in the quarterfinals. The Danish men’s and women’s curling teams also took part in Beijing, finishing 10th and 9th, respectively. Denmark’s four individual participants in Beijing took part in Alpine skiing, biathlon and speed skating.
