Spain, Germany, Denmark, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United States are coming together in an unprecedented collaboration to revolutionize global travel through high-speed rail innovation. This powerful alliance aims to transform how people experience transportation by creating cutting-edge, efficient, and sustainable rail networks that span across continents. With each country bringing its own expertise, resources, and commitment to progress, this initiative is set to not only enhance connectivity but also redefine the future of travel, making it faster, more accessible, and environmentally friendly. The partnership promises to unlock a new era of seamless international travel, where high-speed trains will offer unparalleled convenience and reliability, fostering stronger economic ties and mobility worldwide.
Talgo Secures Major Contract with Saudi Arabia Railways for 20 High-Speed Trains
Talgo, a leading Spanish company renowned for its expertise in the design, manufacture, and maintenance of high-speed lightweight rail vehicles, has secured a significant contract with Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) to produce and maintain 20 new high-speed trains. This major deal highlights the strengthening of the ongoing partnership between the two entities, with Talgo trains already in operation in the region since 2018.
The 20 new trains will be identical in design and performance to the 35 Talgo 350 trains that are currently in service in Saudi Arabia. Each train will be equipped with two power cars (locomotives) and 13 coaches, providing seating for 417 passengers in two classes. Additionally, the trains will include designated spaces for catering services and accommodations for passengers with reduced mobility, ensuring a high level of comfort for all travelers.

This contract is part of Saudi Arabia’s larger vision to enhance its passenger rail services in response to the growing demand for transportation. The Saudi operator of the line, which currently operates the 35 Talgo 350 trains, plans to further expand its fleet as part of this ambitious expansion project. The existing Talgo 350 trains, which operate at a top commercial speed of 300 km/h, have garnered positive feedback for their exceptional operational efficiency and customer satisfaction since their introduction. This success is evident in the continued demand for more high-speed rail services in the region.
A key element of this new agreement is the extension of maintenance and operational services for the current fleet, alongside the addition of the new trains. Talgo will manage the maintenance for the entire fleet, including the 35 existing trains and the 20 new units, up until 2033. There is also an option to extend the contract until 2038, offering long-term stability for both Talgo and Saudi Arabia Railways.

One of the standout features of Talgo trains is their innovative design, which includes full platform-level access. This eliminates the need for steps inside the trains, making it easier for passengers to board and disembark, particularly during peak travel times. This is especially important in Saudi Arabia, where travel demand peaks during the Hajj pilgrimage season. The new trains will play a crucial role in managing this heightened demand, which sees a significant increase in the number of services during the pilgrimage. On a typical day, over 100 services are operated with Talgo trains, and during the Hajj season, this number rises to more than 140 daily services. In 2025, the line is expected to transport nearly 2 million passengers during the Hajj alone.
The Haramain High-Speed Railway, which is a critical infrastructure project in Saudi Arabia, spans 450 kilometers and operates with similar standards to Spain’s high-speed rail network. The trains on this line, including the newly added Talgo units, are capable of reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h. The railway is equipped with the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) level 2 signaling, ensuring the highest safety and operational standards. In addition to the production and delivery of the new trains, Talgo will oversee the operation of two maintenance facilities located within Saudi Arabia, creating job opportunities for over 270 employees and contributing to the local economy.
