Reza Pahlavi, son of the last shah and a key Iranian opposition figure, will visit Berlin on Thursday to hold talks with Armin Laschet, a member of the German parliament for Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democrats.
The meeting will be held together with parliamentarians from various parties, Laschet, who chairs the Bundestag’s foreign policy committee, told dpa on Tuesday.
Laschet said the talks would link up to an exchange with Pahlavi on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in February, when it had been agreed to continue the dialogue in Berlin. The talks would serve to exchange information on the current political situation in Iran and ideas on the country’s future, he said.
Pahlavi is also to speak to journalists on Thursday. A Foreign Office spokeswoman said that no meeting was planned with Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.
Iranian monarchists see Pahlavi, who has lived in exile for decades since his father, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, was deposed as shah in 1979, as a potential opposition leader. But how much support he has in the country remains unclear.
