Maersk has announced a series of strategic initiatives to strengthen its long-term commitment to India’s maritime sector, unveiled during India Maritime Week 2025 (27–31 October).

The company plans to expand its operations through significant investments in port infrastructure, vessel reflagging, and deeper local partnerships. A key component is the proposed USD 2 billion (₹17,000 crore) expansion of APM Terminals Pipavav in Gujarat, in collaboration with the Gujarat Maritime Board.

Our goal is to make Pipavav a model of world-class efficiency and green growth, while creating lasting prosperity for local communities and strengthening India’s leadership in maritime trade.

… saod Jon Goldner, Chief Executive, APM Terminals Asia & Middle East

The project, contingent on a long-term concession agreement, aims to enhance container and liquid cargo handling capabilities, improve multimodal connectivity, and position Pipavav as a model for world-class efficiency, sustainability, and local economic development.

Deepening engagement with India’s maritime ecosystem

Maersk is also deepening its engagement with India’s domestic maritime ecosystem. It has registered a new entity, Maersk Bharat IFSC Pvt. Ltd., at GIFT City, Gujarat, and flagged two vessels under the Indian flag, supporting domestic tonnage and supply chain resilience.

By flagging vessels under the Indian flag, manufacturing seaworthy containers in India and engaging local yards for maintenance and repair work, we’re not just expanding our operational flexibility; we’re investing in the development of India’s maritime ecosystem and demonstrating our belief in the country’s technical capabilities.

… explained Ahmed Hassan, Head of Asset Strategy, A.P. Moller – Maersk

Furthermore, the company is collaborating with Indian shipyards for vessel maintenance, repair, and potential new-building projects, as well as exploring local container manufacturing.

To remind, earlier this year, Maersk and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaboration opportunities in ship repair, maintenance, and building activities in India.

These efforts aim to strengthen India’s maritime capabilities, promote knowledge transfer, and create employment opportunities.

Investing in maritime talent

In addition, Maersk is investing in maritime talent by partnering with educational institutions and skill development organizations. These programs aim to offer world-class onboard training to cadets and ratings, fostering a highly competent workforce aligned with global standards.

Collectively, Maersk’s initiatives reflect a multi-dimensional strategy to expand its footprint in India while supporting the country’s long-term maritime growth, sustainability, and workforce development.
