Following the resignation of Berlin Culture Senator Sarah Wedl-Wilson last week, the CDU district chairpersons have decided on her successor: Stefan Evers, Berlin’s Finance Senator.

Evers was CDU Berlin’s Secretary General from 2016 until 2023 and has been the Deputy State Chairman of Berlin since 2023. He will now be the city’s Finance Senator and Culture Senator simultaneously.

The 46-year-old law graduate grew up in Paderborn and has lived in Berlin since 1999. He has represented Treptow-Köpenick in the Berlin House of Representatives since 2011 and is the CDU’s spokesperson for urban development policy. He was also responsible for CDU’s successful 2023 repeat election campaign and is a member of the “Lesbians and Gays in the Union” group.

Tagesspiegel and RBB had previously reported that former Justice Senator Thomas Heilmann could become the new Culture Senator, as he had been suggested by the President of the House of Representatives. “But Heilmann wasn’t really an option,” a member of parliament told Berliner Zeitung, the first outlet to report on Wedl-Wilson’s successor.
