BERLIN — While the statewide group Phone-Free CT is asking lawmakers to adopt a bell-to-bell cellphone ban in public schools, Berlin schools already have their own rules that closely match what the group is seeking.
According to district policies, the Berlin Middle High School students in grades 6-12 are not allowed to have cellphones, headphones or other electronic devices during the school day unless a teacher gives permission for class use. The policy requires students to store their devices in lockers from 7:20 a.m. to 2:07 p.m. and not carry them at any time during school hours.
Students who break the rule face consequences that increase with each offense, including device confiscation, parent contact and possible suspension
The elementary schools follow a similar approach. Students are not allowed to use or access personal electronic devices during the school day. Phones must be turned off and stored in lockers from 9 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. Devices may be confiscated and returned only to parents if the rule is broken.
