Ozempic® (semaglutide) tablets will be available for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) starting May 4, 2026, according to Novo Nordisk.

The Ozempic tablet is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist approved as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with T2D, and to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular (CV) events (CV death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, or non-fatal stroke) in adults with T2D who are at high risk for these events.

Previously, oral semaglutide was marketed under the brand name Rybelsus® in 3mg, 7mg, and 14mg doses. Following a bioequivalence study and a clinical trial program, the FDA approved a reformulated version in 1.5mg, 4mg, and 9mg strengths.

According to Novo Nordisk, the new formulation delivers the same efficacy and safety profile as the originally approved formulation but in a smaller pill size. The transition to the new Ozempic tablet name is intended to help patients and clinicians more easily recognize the T2D treatment options.

“Ozempic pill delivers strong blood sugar control and proven cardiovascular risk reduction, and people may also lose weight,” said Ed Cinca, senior vice president of Marketing & Patient Solutions at Novo Nordisk Inc. “With Ozempic now available as both an injection and oral option under one brand, treatment can be individualized so patients are getting the proven semaglutide medicine that best fits their needs.”

Upon launch, the Ozempic tablet will be available nationwide at retail pharmacies, select telehealth providers, and through NovoCare® Pharmacy. The price of Ozempic tablets for patients who opt to self-pay will be $149 for the 1.5mg starting dose, $199 per month for the 4mg dose, and $299 per month for the 9mg dose.

Patients should continue taking Rybelsus as directed and consult with their health care providers about transitioning to the new formulation. Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets are not interchangeable on a mg-to-mg basis. According to the Company, Rybelsus will continue to be marketed outside of the US.
