Since February 2011, the UNESCO Liaison Office in Brussels and UNESCO Representation to the European Union (EU) contributes to represent UNESCO towards the European Institutions, to advocate for UNESCO’s mandate and increase the visibility of UNESCO’s programmes and activities, with the final aim of increasing the UNESCO-EU partnership.

The longstanding partnership between UNESCO and the EU has materialized in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both parties on October 8th, 2012 whereby the two sides expressed their wish to enhance the dialogue, foster exchange of best practices and further strengthen the partnership.

In the last decade, UNESCO and the EU have undertaken 109 projects across the world for a total value of more than USD 311 million covering all of UNESCO’s fields of competence – culture, education, freedom of expression and equal access to information, and science – and addressing common priorities.

By joining forces at both Headquarters and field level, UNESCO and the EU can effectively support governments, local authorities, civil society, and citizens and together continue to focus on the most critical drivers for sustainable development, poverty eradication and lasting peace. Together, UNESCO and the European Union ensure that no one is left behind!
