Athens, Berlin seek alignment on EU policy

Greek and German foreign ministers sought common ground Monday on how Europe makes policy toward third countries, including defense, during talks in Athens that also covered Ukraine, the Gulf and Iran, and Turkey.

Greek FM George Gerapetritis highlighted strategic concerns over regional balances, while Germany counterpart Johann Wadephul emphasized industrial and economic interests, underscoring differences on EU-Turkey ties.

“Armaments and their nonuse against allied countries constitute a necessary condition,” Gerapetritis said, outlining Greek sensitivities.

Wadephul signaled interest in deeper defense cooperation, including shipyards, frigate upgrades and German-built systems, and backed revising EU decision-making to avoid persistent blockages.

Both agreed that, after hostilities end in the Strait of Hormuz, they would contribute to maritime security in the region overall.
