“We have promised to talk during May, either in May or in early June,” Sinkevičius told the radio station Žinų radijas on Tuesday.

“After long consideration, […] I am ready to close this question in the coming month. One way or the other those discussions must end […],” said Sinkevičius.

According to him, pros and cons of the current composition of the coalition must be weighed. He says that changes sometimes have not only positive outcomes but also some consequences and may be harmful.

Tension in the coalition increased recently, when many members of the Nemunas Dawn party voted against establishing a new military training area in southwestern Lithuania, which is needed as the country is creating a division-sized military unit.

At the time, Sinkevičius, then acting chairman of the LSDP, vowed that the party would decide on the coalition after new leadership elections in May. He was elected LSDP leader at the party’s convention on 1 May.

Sinkevičius, mayor of Jonava district, intends to speak to Remigijus Žemaitaitis, leader of the Nemunas Dawn party. He says coalition partners must maintain relations even if they are complicated.

LSDP leader previously confirmed that “minimal discussions” were ongoing with the party Democrats For Lithuania on it joining the coalition.

As reported, the current ruling coalition was formed following the resignation of then Prime Minister and LSDP leader Gintautas Paluckas last July.

The new coalition created in August 2025 consists of the LSDP, the Nemunas Dawn and the Farmers and Greens Union. The Cabinet is led by Social Democratic Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė.

The previous coalition formed after 2024 parliamentary elections included the LSDP, the Nemunas Dawn and Democrats For Lithuania.
