AMSTERDAM, N.Y. (WNYT) — Amsterdam Police said a 60-year-old man died after an e-bike crash with a car, and the driver returned to the scene within minutes.
According to a press release, Amsterdam police got a 911 transfer from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office at about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, for a crash with injuries at Guy Park Avenue and Wall Street. Officers found a damaged e-bike in the intersection and Jose L. Lozada of Amsterdam unresponsive on the sidewalk.
Police said officers began CPR until Amsterdam Fire Department crews arrived and took over care. Lozada, 60, was taken to St. Mary’s hospital, where police said he later died.
Police said initial reports showed the driver left the scene, but the driver returned within minutes after the crash. The driver is a licensed Amsterdam driver under 18 and has been fully cooperative, according to police.
With help from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police, police determined the bicycle was an e-bike and secured both the e-bike and the vehicle as evidence. Police said state police completed a crash reconstruction and investigators also canvassed the neighborhood for video and witness accounts.
The investigation is continuing, according to police. No tickets or charges have been filed.
