During the summer, Viking Line’s vessels will be filled with holidaymakers, and the company will once again double its capacity on the Tallinn route while offering special cruises to Visby. One new feature this summer is that passengers will be able to stay overnight on board Viking XPRS in port in Tallinn and travel back to Helsinki in peace and quiet the next morning.

By placing Viking Cinderella and Gabriella in service alongside Viking XPRS, which provides scheduled service, Viking Line will double capacity again this summer on its  Helsinki–Tallinn route during the most intense weeks of the summer holidays. From June 17 to August 9, Viking Line will serve the route with three daily departures – and four on Friday – from the Skatudden terminal in Helsinki to Tallinn.

For a number of years, Estonia has been the most popular summer destination abroad for Finns. Last summer, Viking Line transported 740,000 passengers between Helsinki and Tallinn, and the goal is to reach similar levels this summer as well.

“The Tallinn route has maintained its strong position with Finns for summer travel. The ease, flexibility and affordability of local tourism attract people year after year. More and more people are also continuing on from Tallinn to other parts of the Baltic region. Travelling with a car is on the rise as travellers seek out destinations beyond Tallinn, which they are already familiar with,” says Minna Tuorila, Commercial Director at Viking Line.

Staying overnight on board and with a morning return to Helsinki

One new feature this summer, which Viking Line is the only shipping company to offer, is providing return passengers en route to Helsinki with the opportunity to stay overnight on board the vessel in port in Tallinn, five days a week. Passengers who have booked a cabin on Viking XPRS can climb on board in the evening, sleep in the vessel and then return to Helsinki the next morning at 10:30 am.

“This service has been developed for passengers who want to use the whole day in Tallinn without stressing about making it back to port in time. This works well for passengers who want to spend a full day in the city and for passengers travelling with their car who are returning, for instance, to Pärnu, Tartu or eastern Estonia. People can have a nice lie-in in their cabin until the vessel docks in Skatudden, or they can choose to enjoy a relaxing breakfast with sea views on board,” adds Minna Tuorila.

“We’ve tested the option of overnight stays in past summers, for instance in connection with big concerts, and have had a really positive response. So we’re offering this option  several days a week during the most intense holiday period, when it fits in our timetables.”

Visby attracts Finns

Along with Tallinn, Stockholm and Mariehamn, Viking Line is offering a total of four special cruises in June and August to Visby on the Swedish island of Gotland. On their cruise, people can get to know this picturesque medieval town and discover what else is to be found on Gotland beyond Visby’s city walls.

“Visby is interesting to many Finns since the destination is still relatively new for many and is also surprisingly difficult to reach on one’s own. On a special cruise, people travel there conveniently and comfortably, which makes it easy to explore the island,” says Minna Tuorila.

Viking Line’s summer service will be supplemented with convenient transport links from different parts of Finland to the ports of Helsinki and Turku. The Finnish bus company Matkahuolto has an app, Matka, that enables travellers to plan their journey, combining long-distance buses and trains, local transport and all of Viking Line’s sea journeys in the same booking.
