“Grond! Grond! Grond!” That thunderous roar from the massive Orc army in Gondor from The Lord of the Rings trilogy will be available as a LEGO set in June with the LEGO Grond (40893) GWP. LEGO The Lord of the Rings Grond (40893)
The LEGO Grond (40893) set builds the battering ram from The Lord of the Rings out of 307 pieces – originally a hundred-foot-long siege weapon used by Sauron’s Orcs under Gothmog’s command during the siege of Minas Tirith. The massive siege weapon is accompanied in the film by various warriors of Sauron, and two Orc minifigures have made it into this set.
True to the film source, the elongated main body of the model with the wolf head at the front is anchored to a buildable frame with eight wheels via four chain elements. Grond also has a play function that allows you to recreate the siege scene of the white city.
The swinging motion can be simulated from outside the battering ram’s frame using a Technic element. As explicitly mentioned in LEGO’s product description, this creates a relatively film-accurate homage to The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, especially when combined with the LEGO Minas Tirith model. Based on the images, the battering ram model comes completely without stickers and measures 12 cm high (4.5 in.), 14 cm long (5.5 in.), and 10 cm wide (4 in.). This makes it roughly the right scale for the gate in the walls of the massive white city model.

The Minifigures
The two included minifigures represent two unnamed Orcs from Sauron’s great army who fight alongside the battering ram Grond during the attack on Minas Tirith in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. One of the two warriors comes with sword and helmet, the other with bow and the hair piece with pointed ears that we already saw on the minifigures in LEGO 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr.
However, this green Orc’s head appears to have a new face design based on what we can see in the official images, which should make at least one of the minifigures exclusive.
Info About the Film Source Material
“Grond” means something like “heavy” in Elvish, and that’s what the hammer of the underworld was called, which then shared its name with the massive battering ram in the form of a wolf skull on chains.
The ram was so heavy that it had to be suspended from a wheeled frame, pulled by beasts of burden, and swung by mountain trolls. It only took a few strikes from Grond to break through the great city gate of Minas Tirith.

The bright flames burning inside the wolf head in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, director Peter Jackson’s film adaptation, were never mentioned by J. R. R. Tolkien. Since the LEGO The Lord of the Rings Grond (40893) GWP follows the film trilogy, the fire was also implemented in the set using two LEGO flame elements.
