According to Berlin’s senator for science, Ina Cziborra, the closure of the building in the middle of the semester was a “medium-scale disaster.” The restrictions will affect both the educational process and the work of the university administration.
TU Berlin explained that an inspection by authorities and the fire department revealed a number of problems with the building, including damp walls and water damage that could affect the power supply and fire protection system.
University President Fatma Deniz noted that experts are currently conducting an additional assessment of the technical condition of the building. According to her, the decision to close was made for safety reasons.

The university adds that they are working on temporary solutions to organize classes and work over the coming weeks, although they acknowledge that the situation creates significant difficulties for students and faculty.
The problem of dilapidated infrastructure is not unique to TU Berlin. Many university buildings in Berlin are in poor condition due to years of underfunding for renovations.
In April, the Berlin Senate already announced the creation of a special company, the Hochschulbaugesellschaft (BHG), which will centrally handle the reconstruction and modernization of the buildings of the city’s eleven public universities.
The main building of TU Berlin is located on Straße des 17. Juni near the Tiergarten and is the central building of one of the largest technical universities in Germany.

The previous university building was built in 1879 – at that time it was the largest structure of its kind in Prussia. During World War II, the building suffered significant damage, and after the war the institution was effectively restarted as the Technical University of Berlin – a symbol of a break with the Nazi past and a transition to a new democratic model of education. Today, the university has over 35 students, and the campus combines historical and modern architecture.
