KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Union Station is installing six original segments of the Berlin Wall as part of its new exhibit, “The Berlin Wall: A World Divided.”
Crews worked to position the massive concrete sections, each about 12 feet tall and more than 5,500 pounds. The segments traveled more than 4,000 nautical miles from Barcelona, Spain.
“They came to us from Barcelona, Spain, they’ve traveled over 4,000 nautical miles to be here in Kansas City,” said Lauren Kovarna, associate vice president of marketing at Union Station.
Historic barrier divided city for decades
The Berlin Wall divided the city from 1961 to 1989. East Germany built the wall to keep people from going west. It fell Nov. 9, 1989, paving the way for reunification.
“The walls stand as a testament to what was division but what is now a symbol of freedom,” Kovarna said. “The goal of the expedition is that people leave feeling grateful that they live in a country but wanting to go and make the world a better place.”
The exhibit brings more than 200 original Cold War artifacts to Union Station. It is the first time this exhibit has been seen in North America.
“You’ll be able to see a desk where kids practiced duck and cover. There’s a gas mask and books on personal and family survival,” Kovarna said.
“The Berlin Wall: A World Divided” opens May 29 and runs through December. Tickets are $26 for adults, $22 for seniors and $15 for members and children.
