Intercell has cancelled all summer events at its regular outdoor site De Binnenplaats in Amsterdam, citing permit issues beyond the team’s control. The courtyard has hosted the Amsterdam techno collective’s events for years. It also forms the heart of the brand’s summer programming.

Notably, the cancellations come days after Music On Festival was cancelled in Amsterdam due to similar permit issues. The Music On situation centred on a tent structure that differed from the one approved under the festival’s permit. Safety concerns then led the Municipality of Amsterdam to revoke that permit.

Then the wider pattern emerges. Amsterdam’s outdoor electronic music programming continues to face increased scrutiny from local authorities. The combined Music On and Intercell cancellations now sit as the most visible cases this summer. The city’s reputation as a global techno destination takes a hit in the short term.

Crucially, not all Intercell programming is off the table. The promoter confirmed its June show at Balkenhaven will still go ahead as planned on June 13. The off-site location now stands as Intercell’s only Dutch outdoor event this summer.

Plus, the cancellations reshape the wider Amsterdam summer dance calendar. Other promoters and venues will need to absorb displaced demand. Follow updates via the official Intercell website.
