Two people were killed and three others seriously injured after a driver lost control  of his vehicle and struck a group of pedestrians on the Upper West Side Friday evening, according to police officials.

It happened around 6 p.m. on West 109th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, police said.

According to officials, a 61-year-old man was behind the wheel and taken into custody. Sources told NY1 it appeared he was intoxicated.

Five pedestrians were taken to a nearby hospital, police said. A 35-year-old man and a 46-year-old man were pronounced dead. A 36-year-old man, a 51-year-old man and a 44-year-old remain in critical condition.

According police, Amsterdam Avenue between 106th and 110th streets are blocked off as officials continue their investigation.
