Private companies in the biotechnology sector are increasingly entering public markets through initial public offerings, according to a recent analysis. One of the latest entrants is Kailera Therapeutics (NASDAQ: KLRA), which is positioning itself as a rival to Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk in the obesity treatment space with its weight-loss drug candidates.

Kailera priced its IPO at $16 per share and began trading on April 17 at $26 per share. While the stock price has since cooled, the company’s pipeline of drug candidates has prompted investor speculation about a potential long-term buying opportunity.

Morgan Stanley research projects the GLP-1 drug market, targeting weight loss, could reach $190 billion by 2035—double the levels seen in 2025. Kailera is developing a weight-loss drug pipeline that includes both injectables and pills, with four candidates in various stages of clinical trials. Its lead candidate, the once-weekly injectable Ribupatide, is currently in phase 3 trials. The company has stated that this drug has the potential to become a category-leading treatment for people living with obesity.

Investing in biotech carries significant risk, particularly for companies with no commercial products on the market. Kailera offers a fresh opportunity due to a relative lack of new biotech offerings in recent years, and it has at least one drug candidate that is further along in clinical trials compared to some other firms. However, there is no guarantee that Ribupatide or any of Kailera’s other drug candidates will receive regulatory approval. The investment is best suited for aggressive investors who are prepared for potential setbacks and believe the potential rewards may eventually outweigh the risks.
