BATON ROUGE, La. (NEWS 15) — Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry made a surprise visit to Greenland on Monday as President Donald Trump’s special envoy, but media reports indicated he did not receive a warm welcome from locals.
Landry stated he traveled to Greenland to build relationships on behalf of the Trump administration.
However, media outlets in Greenland reported that locals greeted him with chants of “go home.”
On President Trump’s behalf, Landry is pushing for U.S. access to the island’s minerals and seeking the right to station American troops there indefinitely.
Greenland’s leader met with Landry on Monday for what he described as a “constructive” meeting.
Despite the discussion, Greenland officials indicated that Trump’s objectives remain unchanged.
The visit comes as the Trump administration seeks to expand U.S. strategic interests in the Arctic region.
