Maersk announced on 12 January the naming of the last vessel in its 17,480 TEU dual-fuel methanol series.
With the delivery of its latest vessel, Barcelona Mærsk, the company has achieved its target of deploying 19 methanol-capable vessels by 2026. The company’s methanol fleet now includes 12 vessels with a capacity of 16,000 TEU, six vessels of 17,480 TEU, and one 15,690-TEU container ship that has been retrofitted to operate on methanol.
In addition, Maersk operates the 2,100-TEU methanol-capable feeder vessel Laura Maersk, which is currently being used for ethanol trials. Looking ahead, the company has also ordered six additional 9,000-TEU methanol-capable vessels, scheduled for delivery from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding by 2027.
The vessel was built in collaboration with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Everllence, and the vessel was namegiven in Ulsan, South Korea. The naming ceremony was attended by the vessel crew, Maersk’s site team and partners from the shipyard.
