Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Center Reduces Workforce Amid Green Transition Uncertainty - News and Statistics

The A.P. Moller Foundation’s Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping has reduced its staff by approximately 30 percent, according to a report from The Maritime Executive published on May 21, 2026. The downsizing comes amid ongoing uncertainty about the form and timing of the shipping industry’s green transition.

Chief technology officer Torben Norgaard has confirmed he is leaving the center to join a commercial venture. Center CEO Bo Cerup-Simonsen stated that the organization is not retreating but adapting to continue delivering on its mission alongside its partners and the broader maritime ecosystem. He noted that the center is deepening its focus and directing energy toward areas where it can have the greatest impact.

Going forward, the center plans to concentrate on technical work, including research into energy efficiency measures and low-carbon propulsion, as well as supporting the development of regulations and policies. Simonsen expressed optimism about the long-term prospects of the International Maritime Organization’s carbon emissions regulatory process. He said that many member states skeptical of aspects of the Net Zero Framework still have reservations about implementation but remain committed to the broader 2023 IMO Greenhouse Gas Strategy, which he described as encouraging for future deal-making.

Simonsen characterized the recent MEPC meetings as leaving the sector in a constructive, if fragile, position, with member states preparing to find a way forward that can secure broad support while meeting the ambition of the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy.

The downsizing may also reflect financial pressures. The center has lost several commercial sponsors since the start of 2025, including notable names in energy, classification, shipping, and marine technology, as new geopolitical headwinds face decarbonization efforts in general. Eighteen core sponsors remain on the public partnership list.
