President Donald Trump shared an image on Truth Social depicting himself seemingly grasping Greenland’s mountainous terrain, apparently reviving his ambitions to acquire the Danish territory.
The post follows Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen’s statement on Monday that his discussion with President Trump’s Arctic special envoy was both respectful and constructive. However, he emphasized the Greenlandic population’s unwavering commitment to self-determination.
Trump, in recent months, has transformed the Arctic island into a geopolitical flashpoint through his assertions of ownership and hints that military force could be employed to secure it. The island operates as a semiautonomous Danish territory, and Denmark’s foreign minister acknowledged on Wednesday, following White House discussions, that a “fundamental disagreement ” persists with Trump regarding the island’s status.
Greenland maintains semiautonomous status under NATO member Denmark, with Trump repeatedly arguing that U.S. control is necessary for national security purposes, sparking sovereignty debates and resistance from both Greenlandic and Danish officials.
“The Greenlandic people are not for sale. Greenlandic self-determination is not something that can be negotiated,” Nielsen stated to Danish TV 2 following his meeting with the envoy, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, on the island. Nielsen also emphasized that Greenland’s residents “seek good cooperation” with the United States, describing his “courtesy meeting” with Landry as occurring with “mutual respect and in a positive atmosphere.”

Upon landing in Greenland on Sunday, Landry reportedly told reporters that Trump had instructed him to “go over there and make as many friends as we can get,” according to the public Danish broadcaster DR. On Monday, Greenland’s Foreign Minister Múte B. Egede informed the press that a working group comprising representatives from the United States, Greenland, and Denmark is addressing America’s persistent requests for control over the territory.
“We haven’t been the ones creating obstacles to cooperation between the United States and Greenland,” the Greenlandic foreign minister stated, having also attended the discussions with Landry and his team in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital. Trump has repeatedly floated the idea that Russia or China might be poised to take Greenland, a claim regional specialists have rejected.
“So if we are to continue down this positive and constructive path, we must await the working group’s report,” he noted, per TV 2, suggesting the group’s efforts now seem “more promising” than previously.
Greenland, a territory formerly under Danish colonial rule with around 57,000 inhabitants, possesses the right to seek independence under a 2009 agreement. However, it remains heavily dependent on its fishing sector and economic assistance from Denmark.
