An exhibition of architectural ideas for a possible community centre in Kasmiškiai village opened on May 27 at the Vilnius District Municipality administration building, near Lithuania’s capital. The display, titled “Community Centre in Kasmiškiai Village: Ideas by VILNIUS TECH Architecture Students”, presents coursework by second-year architecture students.

The projects focus on how a community centre could serve a fast-growing local population by bringing together residents, services and everyday activities in one shared place.

The exhibition includes work by Martyna Jazgevičiūtė, Rugilė Karaliūtė, Gerda Kumpaitytė, Urtė Mikalauskaitė, Aistė Marozaitė and Morta Gintarė Vasiulytė. Their projects were supervised by lecturers from the Department of Urban Design at VILNIUS TECH: Associate Professor Raimund Stupak, Associate Professor Giedrė Ratkutė-Skačkauskienė, assistant Eglė Truskauskienė and lecturer Agnė Vėtė.

Representatives of VILNIUS TECH, the authors of the works and municipal administration staff attended the opening. Vytautas Vansavičius, director of the Vilnius District Municipality administration, welcomed participants on behalf of Mayor Robertas Duchnevičius and said the municipality’s cooperation with the university was producing practical results.

“First of all, I want to welcome the cooperation between our municipality and VILNIUS TECH. The agreement signed in 2023 became the start of real initiatives. Today we see one of the results, as young future architects apply their knowledge to visions for spaces in Vilnius District,” Vansavičius said.

In Lithuania, municipalities are local government authorities responsible for public administration and services in their territories. Vilnius District Municipality covers areas surrounding the city of Vilnius, including villages and suburban settlements where population growth can increase demand for local services.

The Kasmiškiai ideas are part of a wider VILNIUS TECH architecture study process. This academic year, students also prepared proposals for the communities of Pavilnys, Salininkai and Užusienis.

Such projects examine how local public service centres could function in settlements and neighbourhoods. For community organisations, these spaces can be more than meeting rooms: they may support activities, volunteering, events and a stronger local identity.

The exhibition is displayed on the first floor of the Vilnius District Municipality administration building. It will remain open until June 23.
