Warsaw grad Mevis kicks for Rams, scores game winner against Bears

  • 2026-02-12

WARSAW, Ind. (WPTA) – For Warsaw native and now Rams placekicker Harrison Mevis, his love for kicking stems from his passion for soccer.

“I grew up having a big leg and always being able to put the ball where I wanted on the soccer field,” Mevis said. “It kind of translated to the football field. I stuck with it and obviously got a lot better.”

From the Warsaw Tigers to Missouri, and now the NFL, Mevis has continued to improve and excel in the world of kicking. Along the way, fans gave him a nickname that stuck — the “Thiccer Kicker.”

It’s a moniker Mevis now embraces.

“I think most kickers are smaller guys,” Mevis said. “I’m just a bigger guy, and so I’ve embraced it. From a team perspective, if you’ve got a guy with a nickname, I think that gives everyone more confidence. I’m going to go out, do my job, and make kicks.”

So when the Rams found themselves in need of a kicker in early November, the “Thiccer Kicker” earned the job.

“It means a lot,” Mevis said. “Ever since I’ve been here, they’ve shown a lot of faith and confidence in me.”

That belief loomed large Sunday, Jan. 18, when the Rams and Bears went to overtime with a spot in the NFC Championship on the line — a moment that could all come down to Mevis’ leg.

“It was a close game, back and forth,” Mevis said. “Anytime you’re in those games, you know every point matters. You just have to be ready.”

Mevis was ready, and as Bears fans know, he delivered the game-winning kick.

“It was an awesome moment,” Mevis said. “A big-time win, especially on the road and in those conditions. We celebrated as hard as we could. I broke a few people’s hearts, but that’s the business.”

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford praised Mevis’ consistency.

“I was confident,” Stafford said. “Every time we’ve asked him, he’s stepped up and made kicks. He’s consistent. He’s a gamer.”

It was an unforgettable moment that Mevis traces back to skills developed in 21 Country.

“I played for Bart Curtis and Coach Richards,” Mevis said. “I think that experience was good. They really let me take over the kicking duties and do what I do. I feel like that experience at that young of an age was very helpful. That propelled me to just having that mindset of, I want to do this for a long time.”

Mevis will continue to do just that as he and the Rams prepare for Sunday’s matchup with the Seahawks, with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line.

“Just focus on going 1-0 on the next kick,” Mevis said. “Keep your head down and keep working. This team is counting on me to go make kicks.”

Those kicks that could very well send Mevis and the Rams on to the Super Bowl.
