On Friday, the Riga City Council’s Security, Order and Corruption Prevention Committee asked Executive Director Jānis Langs to ban residents from walking on the ice of the Daugava River for safety reasons.

All committee members voted in favour of the decision.

Persons found on the ice during the ban may be issued a warning or fined up to €100.

In recent weeks, the Daugava River in Rīga has become an unofficial walking trail between bridges, with many people visible on the river ice.

On February 3rd, the ban on walking on the ice of the Daugava River in the centre of Riga was lifted, but it was still prohibited to stay on the ice of the water body closer than 50 meters from bridges and overpasses. The police said in advance that the ice of the Daugava River under the bridges in the city centre is fragile and dangerous.

Residents are urged to observe safety requirements and to choose only permitted areas for recreation on the ice, which can be viewed on a specially created ice map on both the Riga City Council and municipal police websites.
