Joachim and Marie relocated from their home in France to Washington in the summer of 2023, due to the prince’s new job at the Danish Embassy under the Ministry of Defence. But now, the prince’s wife has revealed that they’ll be returning to Denmark and are eager to get back to work and their patronages.
Marie spoke to Danish newspaper BILLED-BLADET from Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen.
According to Hello!, she said: “I’m looking forward to getting back to my work and my patronages. And getting back to Denmark. And what happens after that, time will tell. We are really looking forward to it. It has been really exciting to be out of the country and be able to support Denmark abroad.”
The princess added that she wants her 16-year-old son, Count Henrik, to finish high school in the States first, before moving back to Denmark next year.
She said her youngest child, Countess Athena, 14, will be able to complete her own schooling back in Denmark. Henrik is the only son of Marie, as Joachim’s other two older sons, Nikolai and Felix, were from his first wife, Princess Alexandra.
Before their move to the US, the family lived in Paris for three years.
In a shock decision back in 2022, Queen Margrethe of Denmark decided four of her eight grandchildren – Joachim’s children – would no longer hold royal titles.
Queen Margrethe’s son attended the accession festivities of his brother, now King Frederik X, on January 14 2024 after their mother’s shock abdication announcement last year.
He was pictured hugging Frederik as they entered Parliament the following day.
