Vilnius is starting a major renewal phase for older schools, with contractors already selected for three buildings constructed about half a century ago. The reconstruction contracts are worth more than EUR 36 million including VAT.

The affected institutions are the primary education branch of Vilnius Duke Gediminas Progymnasium at Miglos Street 1A, Vyturys Primary School at Taikos Street 189 in the Justiniškės district, and Šeškinė Primary School at Šeškinės Street 15. Pupils from all three schools will temporarily study in other premises adapted for education while construction is under way.

The first stage covers three primary-level education sites in different parts of Lithuania’s capital. For international readers, a progymnasium in Lithuania usually covers lower grades before gymnasium-level education, but the site named here is its primary education branch.

The projects will add new extensions to the old buildings and substantially renew the existing blocks. After reconstruction, the schools are expected to reach the A++ energy efficiency class.

Vilniaus vystymo kompanija, the municipal company responsible for developing and managing public-interest infrastructure projects in the city, selected the contractors through public procurement.

UAB Infes will carry out the Miglos Street project for EUR 12.6 million including VAT. UAB Kalvastos statyba will reconstruct Vyturys Primary School for EUR 12.6 million including VAT. The Šeškinė Primary School contract has been awarded to UAB KRS and is valued at EUR 11.1 million. UAB is the Lithuanian abbreviation for a private limited liability company.

Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas said these are three of six schools that should change substantially in the city over the next two years. He said demand for school places in the capital is growing quickly, so Vilnius is expanding older schools alongside new education projects.

The reconstructed schools are planned to have additional classrooms, renewed shared spaces, rooms for events and various activities, and upgraded sports facilities. The projects also include sports halls, outdoor grounds, basketball and football areas, outdoor activity zones and terraces.

The school grounds will be improved with pedestrian paths and more convenient access. New trees and shrubs will be planted, and existing greenery will be maintained.

The main short-term disruption for families will be relocation during construction. The announcement says pupils from all three schools will study temporarily in other education-suitable premises, but it does not name the specific temporary locations.

The three reconstruction projects are scheduled to be completed before the start of the 2028 school year, meaning pupils should be able to use the renewed premises by September 2028 if the timetable is met.

A contractor is also expected to be announced soon for the reconstruction of the Vilnius Duke Gediminas Progymnasium primary education branch at Blindžių Street 3. Renewal designs are being prepared for a branch of VGTU Engineering Lyceum on Nemenčinės Road and for St Christopher Gymnasium.

A later phase includes two more schools. Architectural design competitions have been announced for Medeina Primary School and Simonas Daukantas Progymnasium. The city expects those renewed schools to open in 2030.

The reconstructions are part of a broader expansion of Vilnius education infrastructure. Under a special financing model, institutional banks lend funds for the construction and reconstruction of education facilities and for later real estate administration. Using this model, Vilnius plans to build four new schools and reconstruct five old ones.

Deputy Mayor Vytautas Mitalas said the city is working not only on new school construction but also on transforming the quality of education buildings inherited from the Soviet period. Laura Joffė, head of Vilniaus vystymo kompanija, said reconstruction makes it possible to increase capacity, improve energy efficiency and adapt spaces to current educational needs.
