Flight operations at Berlin’s international airport resumed on Friday after being suspended since the previous evening due to severe weather.

The airport was officially cleared for operations at midday, with the first departure taking off for Amsterdam shortly before 1 pm (1200 GMT), an airport spokesman said.

Operations are now being ramped up gradually, though passengers should continue to expect delays and cancellations, the spokesman added.

No aircraft had been able to take off or land at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) since Thursday evening because of black ice and persistent freezing rain.

Operations also remained suspended on Friday morning.

Overnight, the airport’s winter maintenance crews treated runways and other operational areas with de-icing agents, but conditions initially remained too slippery for flights, according to reports earlier in the day.

Berlin has been experiencing a weeks-long period of cold weather combined with snow and freezing rain, causing major transport disruptions.
