On a wooded plot in Zealand, Denmark, a broad roof of oak shingles drops around a 35-square-meter summerhouse built for six people. SAGA Space Architects calls it EcoNeo, a compact timber retreat with two sleeping mezzanines tucked above its shared interior and a sauna set into the ground floor. The scale is closer to a studio apartment, but the silhouette echoes a traditional cabin, with deep eaves and large windows. Meanwhile, a terrace extends into the surrounding garden.

 

Earlier this year, designboom looked inside SAGA’s lunar and underwater habitats, where limited space shapes every surface and system. EcoNeo brings that experience back to Earth. The technology stays mostly behind the timber, while the exterior speaks in familiar Danish summerhouse terms through its steep roof and weathering shingles. Wide openings pull trees and shifting daylight into the rooms.

Across the ground floor of EcoNeo, the team at SAGA Space Architects organizes the kitchen and bathroom around a central living area that can seat up to ten people. Integrated storage lines the edges to leave the middle open, while two mezzanines above form the primary sleeping areas for a family of four. Long views through the house keep the compact plan visually connected, and changes in height give each zone its own atmosphere without closing it away.

 

Large windows extend the interior toward the garden, while a mechanical skylight sends daylight into the center of the plan. The terrace adds another room in warm weather, reached directly from the main space. Nearby, the indoor sauna pairs with a cold plunge outside, bringing a familiar Scandinavian ritual into a house shaped through space-habitat research.

Oak shingles wrap the exterior and continue across the roof, giving the compact volume a single textured surface that will shift in tone as it weathers. Inside, plywood and Douglas fir form much of the visible shell. Birch and OSB appear through built-in elements, while wood-fiber insulation sits within the walls. The palette keeps the rooms warm and tactile, even as the construction process begins with code and machine cutting.

 

SAGA developed EcoNeo as a fully parametric digital model before sending its components to a CNC milling machine. The structure breaks into small labeled modules that can be handled with limited lifting equipment and assembled in sequence. Once joined, the pieces act as one structural body. This manufacturing logic gives the studio close control over each cut and connection, while reducing offcuts and time spent making adjustments on site.

Inside the wooden shell, circadian lighting follows a 24-hour rhythm developed through SAGA’s work with confined environments. A custom sensor network tracks air quality and movement. Linked to a central operating system, the house can open windows and move blinds, while also managing the sauna as interior conditions change.

 

SAGA estimates that the compact footprint and biogenic construction lower annual carbon emissions by around 80 percent compared with an average newly built Danish summerhouse. Much of that reduction begins with the floor area itself: 35 square meters against the 109.1-square-meter average cited by the studio for Danish summerhouses built between 2010 and 2020.
